The most highlighted & a protected area called Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Megamalai, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the most well-liked tourist destinations in Meghamalai and one of Tamilnadu’s most prominent wildlife spots.
The 63,000 hectare Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is a sanctuary for wildlife and enthusiasts of the natural world. This wildlife sanctuary serves as a buffer zone for Kerala’s Periyar Tiger Reserve because it is situated near the Tamilnadu–Kerala boundary. For those who enjoy the outdoors and wildlife, the refuge is a paradise.
There are several varieties of flora and animals found there, ranging from shrub and evergreen forests to a variety of mammals, birds, and reptiles. There are plans to create a tiger reserve at the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Theni district. It is one of the locations that Meghamalai packages simply must include.
The sanctuary is home to elephants, tigers, leopards, Nilgiri tahr, gaurs, spotted deer, barking deer, sambar deer, wild boar, porcupine, Nilgiri langur, lion-tailed macaque, common langur, bonnet macaque, sloth bear, grey junglefowl, flying squirrel, and smooth-coated otter. It shares boundaries with Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel Sanctuary and Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala.
Numerous bird species may be found in the Meghamalai forest area, such as the pied bush chat, Blyth’s reed warbler, red-whiskered bulbul, common iora, White-browed wagtail, grey wagtail, barn swallow, spotted dove, Asian paradise flycatcher, and long-tailed shrike. Furthermore, the wood snake is a “point endemic,” meaning it is unique to the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary and cannot be found anywhere else.
The sanctuary is located 3 km near to Megamalai bus stop. You can reach here with the assistance of a private cab only. Sanctuary timing is morning 6 am to evening 6 pm. Free Entry to all.
